Randy Pausch's Last Lecture

Mr. Randy Pausch gave his last lecture at Carnegie Mellon University on September 7, 2011. At the time Mr. Pausch had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was only given three to six months of good health. Mr. Pausch has a very humorous and lively spirit and he is not in denial of his illness.

In Mr. Pausch's last video entitled, Achieving Your Childhood Dreams, Mr. Pausch talked about the lessons he learned while achieving his childhood dreams. A couple of the dreams he talked about were: playing in the NFL and being a Disney Imaginer. Of these lessons, Mr. Pausch got more form his dream of playing in the NFL than any of the others. Although Mr. Pausch never made it to the NFL, he was able to play football as a child. He talked about how he had a very old-school coach that taught the players fundamentals. A statement that his assistant football coach told him that Mr. Pausch carried through life was, " When you are doing wrong and nobody is saying anything to you anymore, that means they gave up on you." This is a very inspiring statement that want to instill in m students. Mr. Pausch explains the importance of experience. He states, "Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you want". This to me is important because we may not always get the results we want from situations, but as long as we gained experience and knowledge from trying and putting forth effort, we have gained a lot. We will know how to make the situation better the next time.

Next, Mr. Pausch talked bout how becoming an imagineer was the hardest thing for him to do. He was faced with many brick walls, while trying to achieve this dream. Mr. Pausch states that,"Brick walls are there for a reason. They are not there to keep us out but to give us a chance to show how badly we want something." This is true; if we want something bad enough we will not let the brick walls stop us from getting it. We will do everything in our power to knock the walls down or climb over it to reach our goal. Mr. Pausch went on to work with imagineering, but he decided to turned down an offer of being an actual imagineer. Instead he became an consultant of an imagineer. So in the end he reached all of his dreams.

Mr. Pausch eventually became a professor to help other enable their childhood dreams. He created a course called Building Virtual Worlds at Carnegie Mellon University. The course allowed students to work on 5 projects throughout the semester with different students. Mr. Pausch really enjoyed being a teacher and teaching the students in a field he really enjoyed.KaShondra Rudolphhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17531937713697407339noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8203737980455494495.post-89938836655312554572011-12-05T18:34:00.000-06:002011-12-05T18:34:35.577-06:00Blog Post #10

Do You Teach or Do You Educate?

In my opinion the video, Do You Teach or Do You Educate?, is eye opening and inspiring. I personally do not lean all the way toward being only and educator and not a teacher. In my opinion, one must teach in order to educate effectively. The materials and skills one teaches and how they teach them, plays the role in whether or not a student is actually being educated. So I think the comparison should be between good and bad teachers instead of teaching verses educating. My definition of a bad teacher is one who feeds facts and no skills and does not deliver a purpose for the information being feed. He or She only requires memorization and "burp back" of information and doesn't instill knowledge. A good teacher on the other hand, teaches information and gives purpose for the information being taught. Also, he or she teaches students how to be resourceful, challenge their thinking and creativity, and create morals within them.

As a future educator, I plan to teach my students many skills and instill in them the importance of setting goals and how to reach them. Also, I plan to instill in my students that with success comes failure. The only way one will learn how to be great at something is to know what it feels like to fail first. You can't learn how to walk without falling down and getting back up.

Mr. McLeod's post made a very great point in a sarcastic way. I have realized that there is both good and bad in everything we do and use in the world today. Technology especially, can have its pros and cons, but it is up to us as educators to help make the best of technology for our students. No a days, technology is one of those things that students must be introduced to. The future jobs of students today will all be technology based.
The iSchool Initiative

Travis Allen's video, The iSchool Initiative, was very informative on the reasons his idea of the iSchool will be beneficial. The idea of using only your iPod or iPad sounds very great. Not having to carrying around a load of books, keeping up with calculators and papers, and having every resource you need all on one devise sounds very useful and again beneficial. Now, with all the beneficial aspects of the iSchool, let's mention the downfalls. I personally would see the iSchool as a big distraction to students. Teachers will soon find many of there students abusing the privilege of this technology in the classroom. There are too many distractions that will take away from a lesson. There are distractions such as Facebook and YouTube that students will focus more on instead of their actual assignment, and with everything being online, what reason is there for students to really come to class for one-on-one learning? So the idea of the iSchool can be both good and bad.
Okay, I must start off by asking the question, "How was this possible?" It sounds so amazing to hear an entire choir singing in tune and on key together, and have never met a day in their life. This just goes to show how the use of technology can make the impossible become possible. Not only did technology make this look so amazing, but Mr. Whitacr's is a very talented person to make a vision as this one come to life. This was a very amazing video.

Throughout the semester I have used my PLN along with my tweet deck to expand my personal learning network. My symbaloo account is my favorite way to organize all of the websites I use. I have added Mrs. Yollis and Mrs. Nancy to my symbaloo profile. I have introduce symbaloo and tweet deck to many of my friends and family, and they have found it to be very helpful as well. One day my mother asked me, what was the html symbol for hearts. I was able to go straight to my symbaloo profile, pull up Mrs. Yollis page and get the codes. I will continue to use my PLN throughout college and when I become a teacher.

KaShondra Rudolphhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17531937713697407339noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8203737980455494495.post-12901742027367323642011-12-04T13:53:00.000-06:002011-12-04T13:53:25.734-06:00Final Project #16Group, JAM (KaShondra Rudolph, Ramsey Willis, Erwin Coleman), Final Project on time Management!!!! I commented on his post entitled The Middle Ages. Mr. McClung and his students were beginning their lesson on the Middle ages and wanted to began the lesson with a little brainstorming. He asked the students to contrast what life was like during the middle ages and renaissance. This was so hilarious, but what can you expect during the brainstorming process from students?

I was assigned to his blog post titled A Fun Halloween. Shane had a really amazing story and he also has a wild imagination. My name is KaShondra Rudolph. I am an EDM310 student from the University of South Alabama and I must say, I really enjoyed your story, A Fun Halloween. My favorite part of the story was the idea of putting blood on your face. Now that was an amazing idea. I also had a very fun Halloween. Even though I did not dress up, I was able to chaperoned a few kids that really enjoyed themselves. When I see kids smile, it make me so happy.
She was able to attend Camp Benzon and go Ab sailing. She had a lot of fun and i wish I was not afraid to do things such as this. My name is Kashondra Rudolph. I am an EDM310 student from the University of South Alabama. I really enjoyed reading your post. It seems like you really had a great time at Camp Benzon. I have never been Ab sailing, but I have tried rock climbing once. Well, I can say I never made it off the ground. The instructor told me I needed to work on my upper body strength. Hopefully one day I will succeed. I am glad you enjoyed yourself!!!

KaShondra Rudolphhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17531937713697407339noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8203737980455494495.post-73180755838081740402011-12-01T13:58:00.001-06:002011-12-04T14:13:29.915-06:00C4T Summary # 4

I was assigned to the blog of Nancy Teaches. She seems to be a very passionate teacher and is always up for learning new things and becoming a better teacher. The first week, I was assigned to her blog post entitled:
Am I So Busy Teaching I Forget to Listen.

This post was a great eye opener for many teachers. In the post, Nancy spoke of how she is so busy teacher and trying to be a great teacher that she sometimes forget to listen to the ideas of the students and do not notice the students who need help but are afraid to ask. I was able to relate to her blog post and my response to her blog post was:
I really enjoyed your post. From a students point of view, I can relate to your post. In the classroom, we as students are sometimes afraid to come forth about confusion or problems within the lesson being taught. I am realizing that this is a fear that I must conquer in order to become more educated an not get to far behind. As a future educator, I realize that it will be my duty to make sure my students are actually getting a clear understanding of what i teach, so they will not have to be the kid in class, lost and afraid to ask questions."

The next week I was assigned to her blog post entitled:I Had An Idea. She assigned essays for her students to write and thought the students did an amazing job with writing them. So after the essays, she came up with an idea of turning the students essays into speeches. They students were really passionate in the idea of helping animals, the earth, and recycling, but Mrs. Nancy was afraid that they did not really know what it meant to give back. From there she came up with the idea of getting the students to do research on humanitarian organizations. This was a really great post. I left here a comment saying:
I am an EDM310 student from the University of South Alabama. I really enjoyed reading your post. I think students have many wonderful ideas and an a wild imagination.

As defined at dictionary.com, a metaphor is a figure of speech in which a term of phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance. To me a metaphor is basically a figure of speech. A few metaphors that I have noticed lately are: "Spill the beans mister", "You are the apple of my eye, sweet pea", " Lets jump for joy and get this thing over with", "I'll believe you when the cows come". Metaphors are often used in everyday conversation and many times they are not noticed. As a future educator, I think it is important to teach students at an early age how to catch the metaphors. We must first teach them that a metaphor does not mean or portray its exact words. Once the students understand a metaphor's true meaning they will be able to view things from many different points of view. I often use metaphors just for a sense of humor or so others will easily understand my point of view.KaShondra Rudolphhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17531937713697407339noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8203737980455494495.post-10070942337083517012011-11-19T20:38:00.001-06:002011-11-20T22:10:23.318-06:00Blog Post # 13

E-Media Fast

As soon as I finish writing this post I will try for a second time to attempt this E-Media Fast. The first time almost worked but face book hit the spot. I started by turning my phone off last night before bed. That was not the hard part. It seems that my computer has been calling my name all day. My mom came home and asked me about a status online and I ran to the computer. So now I have to start all over. It is now 9:40 and my E-Media Fast starts once more. I will post again tomorrow.

Okay so I must honestly say, I did not past the test!!!! My fast lasted almost 24 hours. I slipped up around 8pm during a boring ride home. I decided to turn my cell phone on and check out Facebook. The e-media fast, at this point had totally slipped my mind. I must say this was a excellent learning experience for me. If it is this impossible for me to go 1 entire day without E-Media, how would I be able to teach a class of students without the use of technology in some way. I do not think that would work well in today's society. When one is use to the use of technology, simple things such as holding long conversations and reading books does not hold ones attention for a long period of time, without the student's attention span decreasing.

This was an excellent project and I will try it once more!!!!KaShondra Rudolphhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17531937713697407339noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8203737980455494495.post-73355464223595978732011-11-19T20:23:00.000-06:002011-11-19T20:23:04.336-06:00Project 15 Smart Board Instrustion Part 2KaShondra Rudolphhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17531937713697407339noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8203737980455494495.post-55801449514285153032011-11-14T19:54:00.002-06:002011-11-14T19:54:36.879-06:00Project #11

KaShondra Rudolphhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17531937713697407339noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8203737980455494495.post-62807970115509307322011-11-13T22:03:00.001-06:002011-11-14T19:43:34.988-06:00Project #14 Skype Interview

Skype Interview with Portia Rivers.KaShondra Rudolphhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17531937713697407339noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8203737980455494495.post-41765587899689013572011-11-13T22:02:00.003-06:002011-12-03T17:48:29.786-06:00C4K#10 Mrs. Yollis

Mrs. Yollis seems to be an amazing teacher. Watch the video, Problems with Education. (3:56) The video is very funny!!! Despite the humor, write a brief summary of your insight of the video. Do you agree or disagree with the point being made? If you agree with the video, briefly explain a way you can fix a few of these problems with education.

In the video, Problems with Education, the comedian make some really funny but true points about problems related to education. He talks about how he should open up a 5 Minute School, which will teach students in 5 minutes the information an average college graduate will "Actually Remember" after 5 years of courses. Not a bad idea for a school; the largest problem is teachers feeding students enough information to remember for the test and not teaching them skills. I actually agree with the point being made in this video. As a future educator, I will take the time to make sure my students actually learn the concepts and reasons for learning the information I teach. Not just feed them information and allow them to remember it for a test at the end of the week and never look back on that subject. I will continue to introduce them with the information and skills so that they will be familiar with it always and actually learn it.KaShondra Rudolphhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17531937713697407339noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8203737980455494495.post-85730963603987887212011-11-13T09:29:00.000-06:002011-11-13T09:29:20.424-06:00Progress Report on Final Project

She is doing an amazing job by introducing her students to the many different sources associated with technology. The students are able to practice their writing skills through writing. This gives each student the opportunity to express their opinions, talk about what they learn and give their classmates feedback as well. The blogs in Mrs. Cassidy's class not only benefits the students, but the parents and guardians as well.
In the video, Did You Know? 3.0 by Karl Fisch, some very interesting points were brought to my attention. The video states how students today are being prepared for jobs that do not exist yet. This shows how the technology of the world is constantly being upgraded; the things we are learning today, we will have to regurgitate those same skills eventually. I can remember as far back to the Ipod and mp3 players becoming popular. During that time, CD players and cassette players became a rare necessity. It always seems as if there is nothing that can replace the current invention until something better comes out.Another great example of how technology is constantly changing is the X-Box Kinect. Who would have thought your actual body would become the controller to a video game. It is also fascinating to learn how fast social networks are expanding. More and more people are actually participating in online dating and to know that 1 out of 8 couples married in the U.S. actually met online is quite interesting. Another interesting fact was, China will soon become the number one English speaking country in the world. "CHINA"

Mr. Winkles Wakes, is another video that demonstrates how the world is changing within the blink of an eye. Dear Mr. Winkles finally awakes after a hundred years of sleep. Only to find that technology has upgraded and expanded throughout the world. Mr. Winkles learns of the discovery of video chatting and x-rays. Mr. Winkles realizes, though the world is constantly changing and new discoveries are being made, some things remains the same. Education is one aspect of the world that still consist of many similarities as one hundred years ago. Many classrooms today still consist of teacher-student learning setting. Many of these classrooms require long lectures with notes being taken on paper. Well, not all classroom settings are still taught this way and personally I do not believe classrooms will be taught this way at all soon. Online education will soon take over teacher lectures.

Sir Ken Robinson: The Importance of Creativity

Sir Ken Robinson states that "school kills creativity", and I think in some ways this can be true. In school students are taught to do thing specific ways and taught to follow orders. This can be good because everyone needs a little guidance in everything, but it can also be a con to creativity. If one is taught to do things a specific way and always follow orders then, the student will never be able to use their imagination and think outside the box of ideas and creative ways to complete tasks. "If you are not prepared to be wrong, then you will never come up with anything orgininal." This takes away the creativity in individuals. I do not think anyone should want to be like another person. I feel that everyone should stand out in their own different way and have their own distinct characteristics, my example of diversity.

Sir Ken also gave the example of the little girl, who does not pay attention in class. The little girl draws a picture of God in her own image. The teacher makes the statement that "No one knows what God looks like" and the girl comments and say, "They will in a minute." This was very fascinating to me. Who is to say what God looks like, but who is to say that the image the little girl painted was not actually God? This is a great example of individual creativity.

Cecelia Gault (Young Student in Finland) Interviews Sir Ken Robinson

This video was an interview by Cecelia Gualt, with Sir. Ken Robinson. The interview shows Cecelia as a very smart girl. She interviewed Ken Robinson with such confidence and maturity. She also stood with great posture and focused most her attention on her person being interviewed. It is very clear that she was taught by and excellent teacher who taught their students great grammar skills, interviewing skills and also how to be confident in the things they do. I will be sure to incorporate activities such as interviewing in my classroom and bring out the inner confidence in my students.

Vicki Davis: Harness Your Students' Digital Smarts

Vicki Davis portrays to be such an amazing teacher. I think it is great that she allows her students to work this much with computers and programs. I will teach my students these skills in my future classroom. Many of these skills are what they need for the futre and it will be great if they are introduced to them at an early age. Every student will need to be able to function computer programs, and every student should have a class that is dedicated to just technology, because the real world is full of it. Ms. Viki Davis is doing a very good thing with her students. Mr. McClung's what I've learned This Year 2008-2009

During Mr. McClung's first year of teaching he basically learned the majority of the Do's and Don'ts as a beginner teacher. Mr. McClung explains how one should be able to read his or her crowd. He talked about how he was so worried about being assessed by his superiors, that he lost touch with his audience and the delivery of his lessons. I often worry that when I become a teacher, I will worry so much about getting my lessons done on time and meeting all of the required standards, that I may lose the attention of my students. Mr. McClung believes that in order for one to be effective, he or she must be able to let their audience drive their instructions. With this being done, the students will feel involved and more interested in learning. Mr. McClung also mentions the importance of being flexible, reasonable and communicating; they will play a great role in teaching experience.

Mr. McClug also talks about the things a teacher should not do. He feels that a teacher should "Not be afraid of technology" and "Never Stop Learning." I agree. Society is constantly changing and as a teacher we should stay caught up with it. In my opinion the world will be technology based one day and students should be taught the basics now. The use of technology will also give teachers more resources to explore so they will be more effective with their teaching methods and materials. Also, a teacher should always be willing to learn. As I stated before, society is constantly changing; therefore, there is much more to learn, constantly. There is always room to learn more.

Mr. McClung's what I've learned This Year 2010-2011
Mr. McClung has learned new things as a third year teacher. He is now a cross country coach and a computer applications teacher. One of the things he mentions as a teacher is to know who your boss is. He talks about how it is important not to lose sight of the students and not or get that they are the reason for teaching. We can not become so entertained in trying to please every individual. My favorite thing Mr. McClung talks about is "Don't touch the keyboard". The importance of this is to not be that person who does the work for students instead of helping them. Be the person who does more explaining and less taking over. Mr. McClung states it like this: "The idea is that if you touch the keyboard and take over the task that they are not trying to learn than they will never learn how to do it on their own and you end up doing all the work." This is a great concept. I have found myself doing assignments for students while trying to explain to them the steps and process of their assignment. So I think we all can learn from this.KaShondra Rudolphhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17531937713697407339noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8203737980455494495.post-14481029254370011792011-10-23T20:21:00.002-05:002011-10-23T20:21:23.705-05:00SmartBoard Project #13 Part 1KaShondra Rudolphhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17531937713697407339noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8203737980455494495.post-6889439997410706112011-10-16T22:38:00.001-05:002011-12-04T14:32:36.410-06:00Blog Post # 8

This is How We Dream Part 1 and 2
In the videos This is How We Dream Part 1 and Part 2, Richard E. Miller talks about the way writing has changed in academy and in the culture.Mr. Miller talks about how he was a person who basically lived by books. Mr. Miller grew up in a house filled with book, and he dreamed of a career that involved working with books. He states how the end results are still books and the only difference now is, many of the books are virtual. He makes it clear that the way we work now is through our computers and not much with pencil and papers. This can be a good thing now because, back with only pencil and paper we were limited to creativity. One could write words, draw a few pictures, color them and basically be done. Now with the use of technology, we can use the creativity God instilled in us. With technology, we can teach better, use more animation, gather more information and get instant feedback from others with in a few minutes. In these video, Mr. Miller constantly compare the use of technology(computer) to the use of the library. With some similarities, there are many more beneficial differences. In my opinion, the library's only use now days is to get access to a computer, realistically. Not many people use libraries for informational use through books.
The links I followed on her page had some really great videos that I think will be something I use in my future classroom. This will give the students time to work with technology and learn something new while using their own imagination. The video that stood out the most to me was Think Different. Think different was about some familiar people who have had a great impact on the world today. Some of these people were, Martin Luther King Jr. Muhammad Ali, Nelson Mandela, and others that I could not think of their names. Many of these people stepped outside of the box, payed no attention to the rules, were trouble makers and did what they thought or knew was right.(Think Different) They did not care about criticism and what people thought of them, they wanted to make a difference. The video describe these people as having no respect for the status quot, and the round pegs in the square holds. They thought differently from the average person. Look where they are now!!! Famous, well known, and MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN SOCIETY.

The Clipper Series, was a very funny, yet very eye opening video. There are many students in school like Chipper, and I can honestly say I have found myself to be a "Chipper" on some occasions. "Procrastination"!! Waiting to the last minute to do assignments is not a good idea. When we procrastinate, there are always issues to face such as: technological issues, emergencies and forgetting to do parts of the assignments. I pray to God, I never end up totally like Chipper. She really missed the entire point of being in school, which is to learn and abide by certain rules. As a future teacher, I do not wish to have any students such as Chipper, but I Know I will. So because of this, I hope to be able to create a great teaching pattern and give the students an environment they will be willing to learn in.
Now lets discuss EDM 310 for Dummies. This video was amazing!!! I think I can put myself in the shoes of the actors in this video. I have realized, that with discipline, determination, and a little guidance anyone can make it in EDM 310, and any other class. The first step to surviving is disciplining yourself, and MANAGING YOUR TIME wisely. If I had to come up with ideas for my own video, I would find a homeless person on the streets, who desire education but lacks resources. I would pay their tuition for a semester in EDM310 and give them a copy of EDM310 for dummies for an entire semester. At the end of the semester, I would write a summary on how well the homeless person did in EDM 310, using the book and its resources for help. This idea will compare an average student with an homeless person, and determine how well anyone can actually learn.
JUST AN IDEA!!!!

Learn to Change, Change to Learn

Learn to Change, Change to Learn was a very interesting video. One of the first statements that was made in the video was, "Education is ranked # 55, and that's below coal mining." My first thought was "REALLY???" This is horrible. The group of teachers who made their statements and short speeches, all had interesting views. I personally find it true when realizing that kids do have a richer environment outside of school. The things they are familiar with such as texting and social networking are prohibited in many schools. To me this is not allowing their creative minds to exploring their own way of learning, nor giving them a more realistic learning environment. Technology and Children are like peanut butter and jelly, these days. So why not incorporate more technology into schools and give the kids a more modern learning environment?KaShondra Rudolphhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17531937713697407339noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8203737980455494495.post-54475472968831812112011-10-16T18:25:00.000-05:002011-10-16T18:25:23.197-05:00Project #12KaShondra Rudolphhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17531937713697407339noreply@blogger.com0
